Carson Wentz Opens With A Bang

Storyline: In last Thursday night’s pre-season opener, Philadelphia Eagles’ fans got their first look at QB Carson Wentz.  And that future looks bright.

On Draft Day 2016 the Philadelphia Eagles selected Carson Wentz with the 2nd overall pick.

Philadelphia already had two quarterbacks and was questioned about who would be #1 come the regular season. Many fans want to see Wentz under center, but the likeliness of that happening is slight.

Sam Bradford, not Wentz, wax the starter in last Thursday’s pre-season home opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bradford played for one series, which led to a Ryan Matthews 5-yard rushing TD.

Fans still wanted to see Wentz. But, after Bradford’s series, HC Doug Peterson put in Chase Daniel. Daniel’s play was erratic. He ran for a three yard TD, but was only 4/10 for 15 yards and was sacked 4 times for total of 19 yards. The chant, “ We want Wentz!” started while Daniel was on the field.

Then “it” happened. With 1:19 remaining in the 2nd Quarter Philadelphia’s Golden Boy, Carson Wentz, trotted out on the field to a standing ovation from Eagles’ fans.

His first pass went incomplete to Nelson Agholor–a good pass that just slipped out of Agholor’s hands. The next pass–Wentz’s first NFL completion–was a 19-yarder to Zach Ertz.

Wentz looked like a vet on most drives. He showed that he can pass, run, and — well — just play quarterback. He finished the night 12/24 for 89 yards and an interception.

He had a great game.

“We want Wentz!” has real meaning. Eagles’ fans really want Wentz to be their Week 1 starting quarterback. He looks to be the best QB in Training Camp and he had the best performance during the first pre-season game.

I think the Eagles got a good look at their future Thursday night. And that future looks bright.
