Storyline: Private companies are making football fields available in India. Written by Nikhil Singh, Mumbai, India
The number of football fans in India has grown considerably since the inception of the Indian Super League (ISL) in 2015. The European Leagues, like English Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, have a huge fan following in India. But lack of proper playing facilities and access to football coaching has hindered growing football as a sport.
There’s an urgent need for the kids to have a place where they can play football. But that has changed. Private companies have started investing in the game. This has fuelled the demand for football turfs and private football coaching in metropolitan cities, like Mumbai. Dusty playgrounds have been replaced by synthetic and natural grass turfs. Kids as well as adults have places to play.
But access comes with a cost: you pay to play. Private companies are investing resources to secure financial returns, and the cost you pay depends on the area in which the turf is located and the quality of the turf. Synthetic turfs costs less, natural grass costs more.
Even though the upkeep of these football turfs is a big task, watching players enjoy the game makes it worth the investment. The surge in the number of football followers, coupled with good facilities and coaching, have contributed to the rise in the number of clubs.
