Storyline: Greek soccer is in crisis. The reason is government corruption. Written by Aric Anderson, Buffalo MN
The world deals with corruption on many levels and the beloved sport of soccer has not been excluded in the path of destruction. Whether player or fan, the corruption in Greek soccer has left few, if any, unscathed. At the root of corruption is the Greek government. Since the government owns the soccer league, the only way to bring back fans and positive reputation is to fight corruption at every level.
Diehard fans of Greek football are dying off. The Greek economy has changed, causing people to have less money. It only makes sense that people will not spend money to watch mediocre teams in a young, but dying, league.
Uncertainty is a result of a corrupt Greek government. The government received loans for which they were incapable of paying. Since the government owns the league, that leaves teams poor. A lot of teams in the Greek SuperLeague can’t pay bills or players. The league is the 21st-most paid in the world, which is shocking knowing where Greek soccer was around 10 years ago.
How can people save the league? People are trying to save it by fighting corruption and through fan ownership. Fans are really coming together to show how much they care. But, unfortunately, fans aren’t showing passion for this beloved sport–at least not as much as they earlier. In 2004 the Greek national team won the EUROs and, again, in 2006 when the Greek SuperLeague was created.
With a deceitful government the League’s future isn’t looking bright. The only way the people can possibly save the league is to fight corruption in the Greek government.
