Storyline: Rumors have it that Pau Gasol will opt out of his contract at season’s end and Carmelo Anthony wants out of New York. Written by Peyton Hook, Galesburg, IL
It has been reported that the Knicks are interested in Pau Gasol of the Bulls. Pau, 35, is averaging 17 points and 11 rebounds (as of 3/1/16). Noah is out for the rest of the year with a shoulder injury.
Rumors have it that he’s done with the Chicago Bulls and will opt out of his contract at season’s end.
The Knicks would most likely have to trade Carmelo Anthony, who may be ready to get out of New York. It’s not a minutes situation. Winning a championship drives Anthony. The Bulls are championship contenders while the Knicks just trying to make the playoffs. The Knicks would likely want someone else from the Bulls–perhaps Tony Snell or Nikola Mirotic.
If this trade goes through Joakim Noah could get back in the starting lineup. Jo gives the team defensive ability and energy, which is important because the Bulls are struggling defensively. They need to keep Noah and Taj Gibson, who’s another good defender. Also, with Gasol getting traded, Jo will score and rebound more.
Stat comparisons are telling. This season Noah averaged 4.3 ppg and 8.8 rpg. Without Pau, Noah averaged 13.5 ppg and 13 rpg. With Pau, the Noah’s highest point total is 10 points.
