Storyline: Johnny Manziel can’t get his life in order–aberrant behavior off the field, erratic play on the field. It adds up to very bad news for the Browns, a team that hasn’t made the Playoffs since 2002. Written by Tanner Bisbee, Maine.
Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine and starting Quarterback Johnny Manziel are about to have it out … again … after yet another drunken Johnny Manziel video surfaced on social media.
The video, discovered by Busted Coverage, shows an intoxicated Manziel singing along to March Madness by Future at the residence of Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR, Mike Evans. The video comes a month after party-boy Johnny was caught red-handed on social media for a drunken video taped made during a Bye Week. He lied to the coaching staff about the video and that transgression cost Manziel his starting job.
While coach Mike Pettine is waiting to see the video before having a discussion, it’s absolutely clear that Manziel is irresponsible and a poor decision maker. The partying continues even after Manziel spent 10 weeks in rehab to treat his alcoholism.
Pettine had this to say: “It falls back into not micromanaging personal lives. It’s very public, unfortunately. The thing that’s disappointing is how public it becomes. And it’s something that, with all of our players, we’re going to sit down with them before they get out of here and talk about where they are personally, where they are professionally. And certainly Johnny will be no exception.”
While Pettine isn’t trying to micro-manage Manziel, it’s also clear that the QB can’t be trusted: his word means little. The Browns drafted Manziel with high hopes, but his off-field antics trump his on-field play.
His “I’m invincible” demeanor seems similar to the attitude taken by Ryan Leaf, the 2nd Pick of the 1998 Draft. Leaf once punched a coach and continually got himself into trouble with the law. If Manziel doesn’t clean up his act he’ll end up like Leaf–another draft bust.
Oversight starts with the Browns, but it also includes the League’s management. Both entities need to hold firm in bounding Manziel’s irresponsible behavior. But it’s not the first time, even recently, for a Browns’ player to act out of bounds. Josh Gordon, another promising Browns’ athlete, couldn’t keep his hands off the bottle or a marijuana cigarette.
All of this is bad news for the Browns, a franchise that hasn’t made the Playoffs since 2002.
