Rocky 4. Rocky vs. The Russian. The machine. The Giant. A lot of those similarities take place in Sunday’s meeting of the Washington Redskins and the New England Patriots.
New England comes into Sunday’s game 7-0 and playing arguable the best football in the league. At 38 years of age Brady continues to gives us reasons why he’s the best ever. The simply amazing thing about the Patriots is all the different ways they can beat you. If the passing game isn’t there, Blount rushes the ball 35 times. Eliminate the run, Brady throws 60 times. The coaching staff, and the consistency at which they do things, leaves most teams playing a guessing game for four quarters.
The Redskins are coming off a successful bye week. Has this team–absolutely riddled with injuries–had time to clean its wounds and prepare for their biggest challenge of the year? After a thrilling comeback against Tampa, Kirk Cousins’ stock has risen. He shows promise and evidence of being a fighter.
Mistake-free football will be the key for Washington. Cousins will have to play perfectly and the defense will have to adjust to the formations and fronts the Patriots throw at them. Yes, it will be a test for the whole organization–from the coaches on down–to pull off an upset.
As fundamental and as perfect as New England may seem, even the Pats can make mistakes. It will be up to Washington to capitalize on them.
Much like Ivan Drago, the Patriots are only human. Washington needs to dig deep and channel some Rocky Balboa.
