Storyline: The College Football Playoff (CFP) is Full of Crap (FOC). I’m mystified about how the Committee ranks the teams. Why is Alabama in the Top Four?
Well it’s that time again! It’s time to ruffle a few feathers.
Although I normally don’t stick my nose into others’ business, I’m more than willing to make an exception in this case. My job description at TSC is to write articles about the NBA. But with the supposedly “new system” to structure college football’s championship I just couldn’t sit idly by and let this classic case of injustice go unnoticed.
For starters, how in the world did the Crimson Tide of Alabama make it into the College Football Playoff (CFP) top four teams? I’ve been hearing about how great this new system is. But, really!? If this system is so great then why are so many undefeated teams–TCU, Baylor, Michigan State, Iowa, Oklahoma State, and Memphis–on the outside looking in?
I’m not delusional to think that ALL of those teams will make it into the CFP. But that doesn’t mean we should throw away their chances just so we can witness Nick Saban storm up and down the sidelines scowling at his players. Haven’t we learned anything from the not so recent Northwestern fiasco? In my opinion I’d like to see one of the other teams get a chance to show off their skills in the playoffs.
Dreams and legacies are made in the postseason. That’s the theme of the playoffs in EVERY sport. This great country of ours was built on the spirit of competition. Players work their butts off during spring workouts and camps–just to make it to “The Show.” But when they’re told that their hard work was basically done for nothing, how do you think they’re going to feel?
Although these guys are big, strong athletes, they still need to feel as though they’re playing for something. Let’s be honest: Who’s ever satisfied with a “participation trophy”? It’s the last kid picked in tryouts with the glasses, asthma, knocked knees, and retainer. He becomes the resident bench warmer!
These guys dedicate themselves to being the best; and I’m sure they want to compete against the best. Members of the media like to throw around the familiar term “strength of schedule.” That’s a bunch of CRAP! These teams played the teams on their schedules and they came out on top. They took care of their business. Alabama played their schedule and didn’t end the regular season undefeated. They took everyone’s best shot and, unfortunately (for them), they lost!
Just like the NFL saying goes: “Next man up!” If we’re going to correct some of the injustices in college football we have to do it the right way. Just because Alabama is “America’s Team” doesn’t mean they should be given a free pass into the CFP.
They should be obligated to EARN it … just like everyone else!
