Have you ever wondered why sports are so important to people? There are a lot of reasons why. But some reasons seem to get more attention than others, like making money and achieving fame.
Another answer—a much more important answer—is the connection between sports and people.
Think about these connections.
Sports can be good for athletes who’re struggling at home–to escape, at least for a while.
Sports brings people together—people from different ethnicities, religion, and wealth.
And sports is a good way for parents and kids to bond.
Sports, you see, is about connections.
That includes how playing sports connects to one’s future. Take Mia Hamm. In her article, Why Girls Playing Sports is So Important, Hamm wrote about how sports helped her set priorities. Her soccer career now over, Hamm devotes time to her children and children’s fitness.
Sports also connect the body, mind, spirit. Those connections are emphasized in The United Nations’ article, Sport for Development and Peace – Why Sport? It’s not only about how sport promotes health in a physical sense, it also enhances health in other ways, too, like the way sports can improve one’s self-esteem.
And while sports have changed over the years, one thing is the same: it’s fun playing games.
That means you won’t know what you’re missing until get out and play.
