As a one-time, above-average high school athlete I’ve followed college, international, and Olympic sports casually for most of my life. I’m not generally interested in professional sports—except for my enthusiasm for the Portland Trail Blazers.

Recently I got to thinking about how a team and its organizational behavior might be analyzed from a numerological point of view. To do this I focused on the numbers associated with the Trail Blazers’ organization, its owner and president of basketball operations, its coach, five starting players, a future prospect, and a February ‘15 trade acquisition.

In this article I’ll take you through an abbreviated version of what I found.

First, here’s background on Numerology. For a more complete analysis please go to my article, “An Introduction to Numerology.”

Numerology is the study of cycles, vibration, and rhythm. The academic community and much of the public treat Numerology as fortune telling or pseudo-science. I’d like to think that my work transcends those perceptions: I have three degrees in psychology and over 50 years of study and practice in the field.

Simple numerology starts by placing a numerical value under each letter in a person’s name (or, in this case, the organization’s name) along with the Date of Birth. By adding these numbers a skilled numerical practitioner can conclude certain characteristics about a person (or an organization) and probable events that may occur in that person’s (or organization’s) life.

Here’s a summary of what the numbers represent:

1, Originality, individuality and will

2, Cooperation, finesse, diplomacy

3, Creativity, self-expression and feelings

4, Discipline, organization and hard work

5, Flexibility, freedom and adventure

6, Responsibility, commitment and care taking

7, Analysis, introspection and detachment

8, Power, leadership and success, and

9, Idealism, perfection group- oriented.

At my blog you’ll see a chart regarding how the numbers are calculated. You’ll also see how we determine the Trail Blazers’ numbers. Here’s what I found.

The number of accomplishment for the Blazers is a 90=9. Nine is the number of idealism, perfection harmony, and group achievement. The number 9 places emphasis on collective cooperation and accomplishment of the team and organization—rather than on glory for the individual. If the group does well, then honors will come to those individuals who excel. The 9 encourages refinement, courtly manners, and an aesthetic polish to the product.

The Inner Number 5 is the number of freedom, flexibility, and fun. It wants to let the kids play and be naturally who they are and do what they do best—with enthusiasm and fun. It also suggests flexibility and willingness to explore the untried, as well as to take risks to be different.

The Outer Number 4 wants to put on a “stern face” and to act in a disciplined and orderly manner. These two numbers, 5 and 4, are always at odds–and it isn’t easy to find balance. That’s because the 4 doesn’t want the 5 to have too much fun. After all, you have to work for everything, says the 4.

The Blazers entered the league in 1970, but I have not been able to find the exact date of entry (i.e., their “birth”). The year was 1970, which was an “8” universal year (1+9+7+0=17 and 1+7=8). This year, 2015, is also an 8 universal year. That suggests the Blazers are at a crossroads with destiny: this year will go a long way toward determining the direction and success of the franchise and team.

With a combination of name and year there are numerous ways to examine the team dynamics and anticipate game performance. Here’s an example of a pre-game analysis:

The numerical signs look pretty encouraging. Indicators suggest that Damian Lillard will be pressing again to put himself alongside Chris Paul as an elite point guard. Results are mixed with ‘Dame scoring around 15 to 18 points (18 rebounds).

LaMarcus Aldridge has two different halves, but comes up big near the end, and will score around 24 points. Wes Matthews plays solid and adds around 16. Nic Batum remains erratic, but in a good way. Robin Lopez is a surprise—with some offensive punch. Give him around 11 points (exactly what he scored). The trend says the Blazers will pull this one out, 102 to 97. That’s close: the final score was 98-93.

The Portland Paradox”: The Paradox of Pride, Playing Time, and the Post-Season Playoff Position Myth (posted at Numerology Rising, 3/15/15).

Having watched the Blazers play—from the last days of Nate’s micro-managing through the third year of the Terry Stotts’ era—there’s a recurring pattern of Portland play: overreliance on the starters and distrust of going deep to the bench. The Blazers have done well at fighting back, playing hard, and showing pride—with spunk up until the end—but for what? Many times they come from 20 or 30 points down to lose by 3-8 points, totally draining the starters and the early rotation players  … losing to boot. While kudos must be given to effort and near-comeback drama, what’s the cost?

Here are some potentially draining losses to be careful about between now (posted on 3/16) and season’s end: 3/16(L), 3/18(L), 3/24(L), 3/27(W), 3/30(W), and 4/1(L).

Again, what I’ve shared here is an abbreviated summary and application of Numerology. Coming up on my blog will be a detailed numerical pre-diagnosis of the NBA Playoffs.

I’m impressed, I have to admit. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s both equally
educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head.
The problem is an issue that too few men and women are speaking intelligently about.
Now i’m very happy that I came across this during my hunt for something concerning this.
