I’ve been playing Fantasy Football for 9 seasons. Sticking with an online game longer than any cleanse, hairstyle, Tory Burch bag, or car shows some level of dedication, right?
Maybe this is the case in another league, in some other parallel dimension, but this is not my reality. If you’re my husband, then you would think—and I assume many women like me would think—that I have chronic-assumed football amnesia.
Why? It’s because he doubts my Fantasy Football knowledge and my knowledge of the game in general. Now, let me be completely transparent: I’ve never won the league, never been the champion. My name is not on the trophy. Have I come close? Many times. I have more “awards” than anybody else in the league. Second place. Third place. Two-time hypothetical champ. “Highest coaching rating” (did that several years in a row). Yet my choices as a Fantasy coach are always questioned. Basic calls during the game continue to be explained (to me) in the simplest of terms (like John Madden talking to his mother).
I know what’s going on. I know who most of the players are. I know their more impressive stats. And, yeah, I tend to stare at their butts more than I should. I may be multi-tasking while the games are on, but I don’t miss much (Thank you, Red Zone Channel). I’ve clocked in the same hours as my husband over the past 9 seasons.
I watch. I listen. Shockingly, I remember. So here we are, months away from the next season, and I’ve recovered enough from last year to garner optimism about the coming season.
Every new season brings with a glimmer of hope that THIS will be the year. I’ll be the champion. This IS the year I will have my team name forever emblazoned on our Lombardi-like trophy. Perhaps this is the year my husband (did I mention he’s our commissioner too?) finally respects my draft choices, my trades (or lack-thereof), and my football knowledge as a fan.
This is my year … I think.
