MLB Just Doesn’t Get It

As we witnessed the magic of baseball in the first Wild Card contest with the Kansas City Royals late game heroics against the Oakland Athletics, MLB still doesn’t get it. While fans packed Kauffman Stadium last night to watch on of the best baseball games ever, millions sat at home tuned in. But many were left awaiting a result just to figure out when their favorite team will start its playoff run.

MLB released the most ignorant of playoff schedules for the first two games in each divisional series. The Baltimore Orioles and Detroit Tigers had to wait until after midnight Wednesday morning to find out if their game started at 5:30pm or 6:00pm ET on Thursday. The same went for Los Angeles Angels fans who were unsure of their 6:00pm or 6:30pm PT start on the same day.

And the understanding is that MLB was concerned over their television deal and the time zones of those playing. But really did that half hour really change anything for them. And now they are in the same predicament regarding two more games on Friday. It will have little to no affect on the players on the field because they have been waiting since February for their chance at a World Series run.

But the “TBD” title next to the game times for the Washington Nationals and Orioles home playoff games is simply screwing over the most important members baseball. MLB has forgotten that this game belongs to the fans first. The difference between playing a 5:30pm or 6:00pm game  on Thursday could be the difference between putting in for time off at work. The poor slubs that have to work a 9-5 everyday have been in limbo since the regular season finale.

People pay hard earned money to watch their favorite teams and the playoffs are supposed to be magical. Magical like the world saw when the Royals make make two separate comebacks to take the Wild Card title in the twelfth inning. Yet some are left trying to sell-off their tickets because MLB could set a schedule.

Well done MLB on alienating those who really do make the game possible.
