With 32 teams and hundreds of players there’s always a lot going on in the NFL. It’s hard to keep up with everything that goes on, but here’s some of the latest news stories from the NFL world:
1. As expected, lots of discussions is focused on the Cleveland Browns’ new acquisition, rookie quarterback Johnny “Football” Manziel. Browns fans are still excited with their new franchise quarterback. The 21 – year old eccentric superstar is continuing to be massively followed by the media and he makes headlines daily due to his off – field deeds. His behavior gets heavily criticized and until J-Football proves that he can be a difference – maker in Cleveland, those voices will continue to shout in his ears. At the moment, Manziel hasn’t yet won the starting quarterback position and unless he focuses on playing the game, chances are he won’t be the Browns’ starting QB when the 2014 season begins.
2. Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson decided he would not attend the team’s mandatory minicamp. Johnson had already skipped all the voluntary workouts this offseason and verbally questioned his future with the team. Johnson’s advisor Andre Melton insists that Johnson has a great relationship with new head coach Bill O’Brien and that his frustration is with the Texans inconsistency at the quarterback position more than anything else. The Texans have will most probably fine Johnson for skipping the minicamp. As a matter of fact, the seven-time Pro Bowler might lose up to $1 million in bonuses if he continues to act like that.
3. Free agent quarterback and former first round pick Josh Freeman has made plans to workout with former NFL coach Jon Gruden and quarterback specialist Terry Shea. Freeman was released by the New York Giants last month after only a few weeks with the team. After being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past season Freeman was signed by the Minnesota Vikings and completely embarrassed himself in a 23-7 loss to the Giants on Monday Night.
4. Tight End Dallas Clark announced his retirement after 11 seasons in the NFL. Clark will be retiring with the Indianapolis Colts where he spent nine seasons establishing himself as one of the best in the business with the help of quarterback Peyton Manning. During his career Clark set the Colts franchise records for both career receptions and touchdown receptions by a tight end and was a key part in the Colts Super Bowl XLI. During the playoffs that year Clark set the NFL postseason records for receiving yards by and tight end with 317.
5. Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers stand out Wide Receiver Mike Williams may not be on the Buffalo Bills roster for Week One. The Bills sent a late-round draft pick to Tampa Bay to acquire Williams and also guaranteed his $1.7 million salary, but he will have to earn his roster spot like everyone else. The Bills have quite the crowd at Wide Receiver, including fourth overall draft pick Sammy Watkins, so even if Williams makes the cut he may be sitting on the bench. Bills receiver Robert Woods seems to have a guaranteed starting job as well, so Williams will most likely be in line behind Woods and Watkins come Week One.
