FA SIGNINGS
Jarius Byrd (FS Buffalo Bills): This seems like the obvious pick up of the offseason. Byrd is not only a Oregon guy, but fills a major void. He is playmaker in the defensive backfield that is an upgrade over any safety the Eagles have played, since Brian Dawkins left.
Johnny Jolly (DT Green Bay Packers): Jolly is a big body that is scheme versatile. He can play all three spots on a 3-4 front and adds size/depth to NT.
Robert Meachem (WR New Orleans Saints): Meachem has been a disappointment for the past two seasons, but has added a consistent deep threat. Though he will not catch many balls, his ability to stretch the field will be a welcome addition to Chip Kelly’s fast-paced offense.
Ed Dickson (TE Baltimore Ravens): Dickson is another underachieving player with a lot of speed. His familiarity with the offense will help, as he is an added weapon as a third TE. He will be more useful than James Casey in the passing game last season, while still an adequate blocker.
Tracy Porter (CB Oakland Raiders): Porter has been a solid CB for years and would add much needed depth. The Eagles had one of the worst passing defenses in the NFL in 2013 and need upgrades across the board. Porter can start or play nickel and dime packages.
Bruce Campbell (OL Carolina Panthers): Campbell was one of the best pure athletes to ever come out of the draft as an offensive lineman. He has spent time playing Guard and Tackle, adding depth across the offensive line. Campbell could fill in as a spot starter when needed.
TRADES
Eagles trade Bryce Brown to the Cleveland Browns for 4th round pick (102) and conditional 2015 pick.
DRAFT
1 (22): Vic Beasley (OLB/DE Clemson)
Beasley is the type of athlete that Chip Kelly and Billy Davis look for on both sides of the ball. The former RB and TE has great speed for an outside rusher and adequate size. The Eagles need to find a way to add more pressure with just four players. He would start as a situational pass-rusher, behind Connor Barwin and Trent Cole, until he adds more weight to become a 3 down LB.
Player Comparison: Chandler Jones
2 (54): Loucheiz Purifoy (CB Florida)
The Eagles need to upgrade their DBs and Purifoy is a taller CB with good potential. He is great in coverage, though doesn’t exude the best ball skills. He may never be a shut-down corner, but will matchup up with taller WRs.
Player Comparison: Carlos Rogers
3 (86): DeAnthony Thomas (RB/RS Oregon)
Chip Kelly’s offense is predicated on speed and Thomas has a ton. His versatility fits well with the Eagles scheme, as he can line up anywhere on the field. Add in the fact he is an explosive return man on kickoffs, he fills several needs with the pick.
Player Comparison: Dexter McCluster
4 (102-From Cleveland): DaQuan Jones (DT Penn State)
Jones has familiarity in the 3-4 defense and can fill in across the entire line. He is another player that help sure up the middle of the defense. Jones is a good athlete for his size, but will most likely add weight to specifically be a run-stuffer for the Eagles.
Player Comparison: Brett Kiesel
4 (118): Travis DePriest (LB Alabama)
DePriest has been a good second MLB for the Crimson Tide, playing next to C.J. Mosley. He fills holes well and is big enough to take on blockers. He has good movement in between the tackles, though will not be a sideline to sideline MLB. He will be drafted to be the heir apparent to Ryans.
Player Comparison: Jameel McClain
5 (150): Isaiah Lewis (S Michigan State)
Lewis is not a physically imposing Safety, is decent in coverage and tackling. As a three year starter, he has a lot of experience and will help on special teams. May never be a starter but will be a good rotational player that will be an upgrade over Kurt Coleman.
Player Comparison: Will Allen
5 (158-from New England): Cody Hoffman (WR BYU)
Hoffman is a big WR that can play outside or in the slot. He has sure hands and good ball skills, adding to a versatile array of weapons on the offense. Hoffman is similar to Riley Cooper and could develop into a middle of the field threat with polishing.
Player Comparison: Riley Cooper
7 (216): Ryan Groy (OG Wisconsin)
The Eagles need to add depth along the offensive line, as they cannot expect the unit to stay as healthy as it did in 2013. Groy can play either Guard position, while starting at a OL factory like Wisconsin.
Player Comparison: Geoff Hangartner
