Growing up in the hills of middle Tennessee, where our lack of a substantial pro team created options for new fans coming up. Naturally, this was before we got the Titans; we as kids were in search of a team to root for. I fortunately, was able to witness one of the greats playing the game, Dan “the man” Marino; From 1993 and on I was a devoted Miami Dolphins fan.
Marino was one of those “old school” quarterbacks who knew the value in the fundamentals of the game, and how to execute them. He did so in a way that made you wonder how he did it, or if it even was work for him. These questions became less of wonder, and more of basic knowledge. Marino unfortunately, was having various injuries that were holding back his MVP potential. This never stopped him from being the leader he was, leading by example. It would be just prior to NFL 2000 season that Marino would retire from football. Astoundingly, Marino would never bring home a Superbowl ring, however, he would become a 2005 hall of famer. He is still regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history.
Greatness, its born or can be achieved by pure dedication and willpower. Granted, some disagree that Ryan Tannehill is even close to comparison. However, Tannehill much like Marino is a believer in fundamentals and teamwork. When athletes like Terrell Owens are covered by the sports media propaganda machine, it would be easier to follow suit. Tannehill, like Marino, prides his recognition on being humble, hard working and above all else, a team player.
Physicality not overlooked, both are legends in their own right. Pure raw uninhibited power rests in the history books with Marino. Swift and efficient is what Tannehill does best. After, the 2013 Jaguars game, there has been whispers of his miracle worker passes. Pounding out every second with pure focus and beautiful end zone passing. Tannehill loves the pocket, which really makes you wonder how far his courage will stretch in even more pressure intense games, only time will tell on that one.
Ultimately, my vote is tied who is the MVP here, time is still on the clock. Personally, I loved just watching a legend like Marino move his rocket on the field in passing yards. Marino, after all did play 3 consecutive seasons with more than 30 touchdown completion passes. On the other hand, Tannehill is showing immense promise at leading the 2013 Miami Dolphins to their first truly successful season, since Marino’s tenure as quarterback.
