The Yankees as we know them are done…. for a few years
Sitting barely over .500, the New York Yankees are on the outside looking in to the playoff race. They are currently fourth in the AL East and five spots out of the Wild Card. With more than half of the season gone it simply doesn’t appear the Yankees can make the playoffs. Assuming New York ends the season with 87-90 wins, every Wild Card team ahead of the Yankees would have to go under .500 for the remainder of the season. I don’t know if it is just me, but those chances are extremely slim. Even if the Yankees somehow manage to squeak into the playoffs, they aren’t going anywhere. They look absolutely terrible as of late.
Looking past this season, it appears New York is going to have a few more of these type seasons. With Derek Jeter’s future uncertain, Alex Rodriguez with his suspension, CC Sabathia’s arm gone, and injuries to many other of their key players, the future does not look bright. In fact it looks incredibly dark. This team is way overpaid for the amount of production they put out. We have to cut them some slack, though, because the injuries are uncontrollable.
This is a team that has to get younger as soon as possible. They must find a viable replacement for Alex Rodriguez and soon to be Derek Jeter. The lack of production from the third base spot is killing them. They have totaled four home runs which is horrific.
Over the next couple offseasons, the Yankees must find a prospect or two that can hit for average and a power hitter. They have struggled immensely at points to get hits and score runs. Also, the Yankees must get a solid pitcher for the rotation. Andy Pettite is winding down, Phil Hughes is awful, and Joba Chamberlain is on his way out.
I trust the Yankees will figure it out like they always do, maybe at the cost of this season and next but they should be back to contention sooner rather than later.
Hey Joe great article but as a die hard Yankee fan I have to say I don’t think the Yanks are ever out of contention, even this year. Arod being back and playing well has provided such a spark for this team. CC and Pettitte have struggled but they have turned it up as of late. If you combine that with Kuroda, who has been an ace, and the pleasant surprise Ivan Nova I think they have a shot. This “budget” they have for next year is a joke I think. Robby Cano will be back and the Yanks will be spending just like they usually do to put a championship team on the field. New York expects nothing less!
