With respect to some of my colleagues here at The Sports Column and media members here in the Big Apple, what have you guys been drinking since the beginning of free agency this summer? For any of you guys to suggest that the Brooklyn Nets are the superior team in New York, obviously none of you watched the 2013 NBA post season.
Although the Knicks succumbed to the Indiana Pacers in the second round, their play was far more superior than anything the Nets presented. The Knicks are constructed the correct way. Two superstars surrounded by a group of role players, great outside shooting, and stifling on ball defense. Everyone’s mesmerized by the Nets acquiring a group of over the hill, overhyped, former all star players.
While I agree that Pierce, Garnett, and the Jet (Jason Terry)vastly improve the Nets starting rotation, the reigning NBA Champs have demonstrated that a formidable bench is key when winning a title. I just don’t see Reggie Evans, AK 47(Andrei Kirelinko), Tyshawn Taylor, and Jerry Stackhouse as a legit threat to challenge the Knicks for the city’s bragging rights.
Carmelo Anthony is a STUD! When healthy, Amare Stoudemire is a STUD! Throw in Chandler to anchor the defense, a healthy Bargnani, Shumpert, JR Smith, and Felton, the Knicks are a pretty scary team. The Nets put a very expensive team on the floor but with very little results. Joe Johnson and Deron Williams are paid more than $35 million combined and neither one of those guys could step up enough to stop their team from being eliminated by the limping Chicago Bulls last season.
No D Rose, Deng, or Hinrich to contest with yet they couldn’t get the job done. Johnson was virtually invisible in Game 7(2-14, 1-9 from 3 point range for 6 points). How can anyone in their right mind think that by adding three older former all stars can suddenly overtake the younger, more talented Knicks as the Kings of New York? Let’s all get together after the all star break and discuss the state of affairs in New York basketball.
