Should the Celtics Trade Rondo?

, ,

The Boston Celtics have recently went into complete rebuilding mode. They have traded SF Paul Pierce and PF/C Kevin Garnett, in addition to Coach Doc Rivers. Many were hoping Paul Pierce could be one of the few players to stay with the same team throughout their entire career. However, that wasn’t the case as he (and Garnett) were sent as a package deal to Brooklyn for several role players and future draft picks. Coach Doc Rivers was also traded, after he quit on the team going into rebuilding, but that’s a totally different discussion.

Now the question is, should Boston completely blow up their roster and trade triple double machine, PG Rajon Rondo, who is coming off a torn ACL.

Positives to Trading Rondo:
If he were traded, the Celtics would likely receive a protected draft pick in a loaded draft class.
The Celtics would increase their chances at top prospects, Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker.
Boston would be unloading a guy that drove out Ray Allen, because he couldn’t get along with him.
Rondo and Doc Rivers reportedly almost got in a fist fight, after a game; showing he doesn’t have the best attitude out there.

Negatives to Trading Rondo:
Boston would be losing a possible once in a lifetime pure point guard.
They would be losing a future franchise player to build a team around.
They could still end up missing out on Wiggins or Parker.
Boston would be losing the only player on the team with championship experience.

In my opinion, I believe Rajon Rondo isn’t a guy that you give up at this point in time. He is worth holding onto to build a future dynasty with and bring back the championship-caliber Celtics, once again. Recently hired Brad Stevens is a huge Rajon Rondo fan, as the PG is a huge Brad Stevens fan, so this is important as Rondo isn’t the easiest player to get along with. There are also 2 years left on Rondo’s contract, so the Celtics can deal him in the future, if they feel its necessary to build a better team.

In other words, hold onto him with the possibility of dealing him in the future.

I agree Joe but I don’t think a Rondo trade is too far off. Once he proves that he’s recovered from the ACL they should deal him. I think at this year’s trade deadline his value will be at its highest. The Celtics aren’t winning the next two years anyway so it’s entirely possible Rondo walks in 2015 when teams like the Knicks have a ton of cap space. Rondo, Shumpert and Melo would challenge Miami going forward!
