Growing up in Baltimore, the Orioles were going to the playoffs but couldn’t get past those dreaded Yankees. There was no professional football team in town, so I had to root for the Cowboys.
College football and college basketball were afterthoughts, and college lacrosse was popular but didn’t grab my interest.
My favorite player was Cal Ripken Jr., but players like Johnny U and Lenny Moore were men I was only able to meet not watch.
Since then, I’ve had a lot to be thankful for. Here they are:
*A Super Bowl championship (Super Bowl XXXV)
*Being able to attend and tailgate at multiple Ravens games
*Ed Reed being drafted from my favorite college team (Miami) to my favorite sports team (Baltimore Ravens)
*Attending both national championship victories by Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse (2005, 2007)
*Meeting Ray Lewis, John Unitas, Deion Sanders and Ed Reed
*A head coach in John Harbaugh who holds the highest winning percentage (69.9 percent) among active coaches, especially considering Jason Garrett was the leading candidate for the job before he declined and Harbaugh accepted
*Having maybe the best defender of all-time (Lewis) play his entire career in Baltimore
*Going to the same high school as the greatest Olympian of all-time, Michael Phelps
There are probably more, but these are the main sports memories I’m thankful for.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
