With Thanksgiving upon us, The Sports Column’s writers are giving their own Sports Thank Yous. I was able to bunch my entire list into 3 different categories, showing my fan pride.
1. Kentucky Pride
My entire family is from the state of Kentucky. My father is the only transplant in the Woods family tree, moving with my mother and sister in the early 1980’s to the east coast. Basketball in Kentucky is EVERYTHING; there are no beaches, bustling cities, or professional sports teams; hell, my grandfather has to drive to another county to buy Bourbon. I was raised a Kentucky basketball fan from the day I was born, and nothing brought me more joy in 2012 than the Kentucky Wildcats winning the 2011-2012 National Championship.
2. Orioles Magic
The last time the Orioles made the playoffs, I had yet to make it to second base with a girl and was listening to KC and JoJo. It took 15 years but the Orioles finally fielded a contending team and it was a one of my highlights of 2012.
3. Ravens Consistency
The rules in the NFL cater to parody. You can bet that two dark horse teams will make the playoffs each year, it gives every fan base in the country hope. The Ravens were a dropped pass away from reaching the Super Bowl last year and are 8-2 and well on their way to reaching the playoffs for the 5th year in a row. All you can ask for as a sports fan is consistency, championships are never guaranteed, but having a team to root for that is consistently a contender is something to be thankful for.
Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
