In honor of The Sports Column’s Thanksgiving lists, here is mine even though we have yet to get an NHL deal together.
Baltimore Orioles. Making the post season for the first time in 15 years was a great run for a city that needed to be reminded about their love for the birds. Buck Showalter, in my opinion, was robbed of Manager of the Year. I can’t wait for next season.
Washington Redskins. I’ve re-kindled my love of the Skins and not because of RGIII. I grew up watching the Redskins and lost touch with them in the heavily forested ‘Ravens county’. With hockey on the shelf I’ve tuned in, donned my Arrington jersey, and found something to route for.
The Super Series. Team Russia played three All-Star Teams from the WHL (Western Hockey League), OHL (Ontario Hockey League) and QMJHL (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League). Each team was stacked with the best prospects and NHL draft picks from North America and Russia. A great way to mark the 40th Anniversary of the original Summit Series that pitted an NHL fueled Team Canada against the mighty Team U.S.S.R.
Washington Capitals. I miss the NHL. I miss tuning in and watching the Caps frustrate the hell of out me. This season was supposed to be an interesting one with new head coach Adam Oates making his return to DC. I grew up watching the Caps, skated with many of my childhood ‘heroes’ and have absorbed myself in this franchise. I am, however, not thankful for the ticket prices.
Hockey. Just in general. The NHL might be on the verge of straightening out this mess they’ve created and may get a 60 game schedule going – fingers crossed – but he sport in general is something that I’m proud to be a part of. Just because the NHL isn’t playing doesn’t mean the whole sport is on lock down. I’ve been playing hockey since I was 3 years old and to me it’s the greatest sport in the world – for that I’m thankful.
