The Baltimore Orioles are relevant for the first time in 15 years. One would assume that with a run differential of -58 (as of 7/30); the Orioles could use a bat to increase production from the offense. One would assume that the Orioles rotation could use a consistent starting pitcher to add to Wei-Yin Chen.
The July 31st trade deadline came and went without the Orioles making a single addition to their roster. This contradicts General Manager Dan Duquette’s stance to improve the team, if the Orioles were in the hunt for the post season. Not only would a starting pitcher, corner infielder or outfielder have helped the Orioles as they battle for the playoffs, but symbolically it would have given Oriole fans confidence that this was a new regime; one that was actually concerned with winning.
Reports say, the Joe Blanton deal fell through over $3 million. With contracts surpassing $25 million per year these days, that is not a significant amount to hold your ground. Now Blanton alone would not have put this team over the top, but a veteran, with a World Series ring, would be a welcome addition to the Orioles’ roster.
How can Dan Duquette look Adam Jones in the eye and tell him that the organization did everything they could to help the team win? It would be a lie.
That’s my Note from the Rafters of Camden Yards.
